Uncovering the Past, Preserving the Present
Welcome to Redline Archaeology – the home of the Redline Archaeological Team (RATs), a dedicated arm of the Redline Home Guard Living History Group. Our mission is simple: to investigate, restore, and preserve the forgotten remnants of Britain’s WWII defences – from pillboxes and air raid shelters to observation posts and military installations.
This blog documents our fieldwork, discoveries, and restoration efforts. Along the way, we’ll share stories from the ground, archive finds, and before-and-after photos of the sites we help bring back to life.
Working with care, curiosity, and a respect for history, the RATs delve beneath the undergrowth and the archives to uncover the wartime landscape that shaped the Home Front. Whether it’s clearing a collapsed shelter, surveying an overgrown defence line, or restoring a pillbox to its former glory, we bring history back into view – one brick at a time.

The RATs are always on the lookout for hidden history. If you know of a wartime structure – a pillbox, shelter, trench, or forgotten relic – that deserves attention, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s in a back garden, a field edge, or buried under brambles, drop us a line and we’ll see if it’s a mission for the Redline Archaeology Team.
