Redline at Gatehampton Pillbox: A Day on Duty

On a warm and sunny day at Gatehampton, the Redline Home Guard once again stood to! Over 100 visitors stopped by to learn about the Home Guard, explore the Gatehampton pillbox, and meet our team as we brought history to life along the Thames.

As ever, the pillbox was set up authentically with a pair of Bren guns, paraffin lamps casting a nostalgic glow, and a healthy supply of wartime banter. Outside, another Bren was deployed in an anti-aircraft role, keeping a careful eye on the skies. Beneath the imposing viaduct, we established a small field office — complete with the most vital piece of Home Guard equipment: the tea-making station.

This event also marked the first outing for our new recruits, Private Smith and Private Horgan, who threw themselves into their duties with enthusiasm and performed superbly. It’s always a pleasure to welcome fresh faces to the ranks and see the next generation of living history in action.

A big thank you to everyone who visited — whether you stopped for a quick look or stayed for a longer chat, your interest keeps the memory of the Home Guard alive.

Stay on watch — we’ll see you at the next post!
