After the hustle and bustle of Henley’s VE Day celebrations, the Redline Home Guard were delighted to enjoy a slightly more relaxed outing at this year’s Wallingford Classic Car Rally on Sunday 11th May. The sun was shining once again, there was plenty of polished motors, military vehicles, and happy spectators.

Three of our number hitched a most welcome ride in Marion’s beautifully maintained WWII Humber PU for the grand parade through Wallingford. Cheered on by the crowds, we waved from the vehicle as it rumbled through the streets.

After the parade, we reformed at Wallingford Railway Station, taking up position to guard the line before boarding the train to Cholsey. Upon arrival, we opened our combined Home Guard Office and Ticket Office, giving new recruit Pte Smith the grand tour and setting about a spot of spring cleaning after the long winter closure.

Returning to Wallingford by train, we were met by Pte Martin, accompanied by his good lady wife and his father. After restoring ourselves with some much-needed cups of tea and coffee, we all boarded again for a round-trip run along the line. As we travelled, Mr Martin Senior kept us well entertained with tales from his years in the Merchant Navy, sharing seafaring yarns from around the globe.

It was a splendid day out—good company, grand vehicles, and a chance to fly the flag for the Redline in more relaxed fashion. Our thanks to Marion for the lift, to the railway for their hospitality, and to all who gave us a wave on the parade!
