Training on the Line: Redline at Cholsey & Wallingford Railway

On a fine evening at the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway, the Redline Home Guard assembled for one of our regular training sessions — and what an evening it turned out to be.

We began with a formal parade and inspection on the station platform, which served admirably as a parade ground, with the yard adding a suitably authentic backdrop. After welcoming our latest recruits, we got straight into drill practice. It’s always vital that new members get to grips with the basics — and just as important that the old hands stay sharp. Smart turnout and tight movements all round.

Following a much-needed NAAFI break, the section began to kit up for a patrol along the railway line. With no trains running and full permission from the railway, we took the opportunity to train in an environment that offered both realism and challenge. Just as we were preparing to move out, we were treated to an unexpected but utterly perfect surprise: the unmistakable sound of a Merlin engine overhead — a Spitfire passing through, right on cue. A truly fitting moment.

Our patrol moved out through the station and onto the track, putting into practice our patrolling formations and field awareness. The trackside environment, with its narrow confines and multiple vantage points, proved an excellent training ground for movement, observation, and communication drills.

All in all, it was a productive and memorable evening. Thanks again to the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway for hosting us and to all who took part — we’ll see you on parade next time!
