What a scorcher! The Redline Home Guard were out in full force at this year’s Woodcote Rally, braving the relentless July sun to put on a cracking display for the crowds.

Our encampment included a field office and authentic 1940s tentage, which became home for four of us on Saturday night. Across the weekend, our collection drew a steady stream of interest from visitors. Among the highlights were the Vickers machine gun, spigot mortar, and two Bren guns – one in an anti-aircraft setup and the other deployed low for close support. Our array of personal weapons included the SMLE, P14, Sten, Thompson, and various pistols, all accompanied by a selection of grenades, mines, and German ordnance, including the feared butterfly bombs and incendiaries.

As the first day drew to a close and the sun dipped below the horizon, the heat of the day quickly gave way to a crisp, clear night under a sky full of stars. While picturesque, it turned unexpectedly chilly, and for those of us sleeping over the combination of woolly blankets and camp beds didn’t exactly deliver the warmest night’s sleep. Still, we made the best of it, keeping hydrated and “on watch” while enjoying the live music drifting over from the main stage.
Sunday morning brought with it a heavy dew, and with our kit exposed to the elements, we got stuck into some essential maintenance. Rifles and the Sten gun were stripped down and given a proper clean and oiling – a small but vital ritual in keeping our equipment in top condition and adding to the realism of the display.

The public response was fantastic, with visitors of all ages keen to hear more about the weapons, the Home Guard, and the broader story of Britain’s wartime defences. We even had a few potential recruits express interest in joining us – they’ll be most welcome at the Redline.
To top it all off, we were honoured to be awarded the Evening Post Cup for Best Military Display, a brilliant recognition of the team’s hard work and dedication. We look forward to attending the presentation evening later this year to collect the trophy in full Home Guard style.

A big thank you to the organisers and everyone who came to say hello. We had a blast – even if we were a little cold come Sunday morning.
