First Aid, Past and Present

The first training evening of 2025 was a memorable one, thanks to two special guests: Sean Swan, Duty Station Officer, and Lisa Churchill, Apprentice Emergency Care Assistant, from Southern Medical Rescue. They arrived in style, bringing along their modern ambulance packed with state-of-the-art medical equipment. But before we delved into the world of modern emergency care, the evening began with a fascinating trip back in time.

Corporal Tierney proudly displayed his impressive collection of WWII medical first aid equipment. From vintage bandages to old-style stretchers, each piece told a story of resilience and resourcefulness. Sean and Lisa were equally captivated, trying on some WWII webbing and donning the thick, woolen greatcoats that were a welcome shield against the cold evening air.

Once we’d warmed up with a bit of history, it was time to step into the present. Sean led us through a detailed tour of their ambulance, explaining the function of each piece of equipment. From trauma kits to advanced cardiac monitors, he provided demonstrations that brought the tools to life, showcasing just how far emergency medicine has come. His knowledge and enthusiasm were infectious.

The evening concluded in the cozy glow of camaraderie, with mugs of hot soup and fresh bread. Around the table, we discussed the evolution of first aid, comparing wartime techniques to today’s life-saving advancements. Sean and Lisa’s shared expertise underscored not only how much has changed but also the enduring importance of first aid, whether in a WWII trench or a modern roadside emergency.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to Sean Swan and Lisa Churchill for their time, expertise, and warm company. Their visit brought history and modern practice together in a way that was both educational and deeply inspiring.

Here’s to more evenings like this, where the past and present meet.
